A tall white Korean porcelain vase has a beautifully subtle bamboo pattern that changes under different lighting conditions. The white on white design achieves its definition from the shiny, slightly raised surface of the bamboo seen against a matte background. White Korean porcelain, called "baek-ja," sometimes is mistakenly called white celadon but it does not have the crackled glaze that defines celadon. This sleek, almost stark, vase from the 1990s has a maker's mark on the bot ...click for details

A celadon vase signed by Ko Chung, one of Korea's master potters, is inlaid with designs of plants representing the four seasons and four virtues. Spring is conveyed with a branch of plum blossoms, which also symbolize courage; summer is the orchid, emblem of refinement; fall is the chrysanthemum, which stands for productivity, and winter is bamboo, symbolizing integrity. The flower and leaf designs are inlaid, or cut into, the body of the vase in the manner celadon has been made for centuri ...click for details

We found this beautifully grained, partially hollowed tree trunk in Korea, where it was used to pound rice. With the addition of a glass top, it has been transformed into a table with lots of charm and a story to tell. Age is difficult to establish on such an item but we were told, and the amount of wear corroborates, that this tree trunk became a rice pounding table sometime during the late 19th century. The wood also is difficult to identify with certainty. The distinctive curving grain is ve ...click for details

Made of luminous elm wood, this early 20th century two-piece Korean cabinet originated in South Chwengchung Province. The larger top part of the stackable chest, used for hanging overcoats and long skirts, has two wide doors to allow full access to the generous space. The bottom portion has two compartments, one with a hasp that could be locked over the horizontally hinged fold-down door; the other compartment with three deep drawers. Painted in the early 19th century by Suk Chun, this work symbolizes the venerated Korean theme of long life. The ancient pine tree is an emblem of longevity, and the old sage, with his prominent high brow and hairless crown, bears a strong resemblance to Canopus, the star god of longevity. This is a quiet painting, dominated by the wonderful pine that is made more compelling because we see only a part of it. The face of the scholar is all about dignity and discipline with just a hint of humor. D ...click for details

This delicately executed mountain landscape is signed and sealed by the Yi Dynasty Korean painter Lim Sam. Ink and slight color on silk, it dates to mid 19th century and depicts a warm country scene in front of a soaring forested mountain. A snug house with soft light in the windows suggests early evening and is apparently the destination of a lone figure on the back of a water buffalo crossing a small bridge. Fine ink lines and muted color produce a restful effect. A tone on tone silk mat and p ...click for details

Two large, lush lotus leaves in soft shades of green dominate this early 20th century Korean painting. Though generally referred to as folk art, Korean works such as this fall into a category unique to Korea known as "functional" or "popular" art. Unlike true folk art, Korean functional paintings were usually the work of professional artists; it was subject matter and widespread use of the paintings by all classes of society that made them similar to folk art. The paintings w ...click for details

The striking cinnabar-colored lacquer on this 19th century trunk signals its use as either a dowry chest or as an especially fine gift for the newly married couple. It is from Korea's South Cholla Province. Yellow brass hardware is a nice contrast to the rich hue of the lacquer. The size of this trunk makes it suitable for use as a small coffee table or low side table. It is in excellent condition. Dimensions: height 3" (59 cm), width 29" (74 cm), depth 15" (38 cm).

Beautifully ornamented, this bronze Korean temple bell matches its look with a sound that is exceptionally clear and long-lasting. The design echoes that of the huge bells of Korea's Shilla Kingdom. A dragon holds the chain at the top of the bell, and flame shapes with Bodhisattva decorate the perimeter. The bell and striker are suspended on a sturdy wood frame. It is in perfect condition. Dimensions: height of bell 13" (33 cm), bell diameter 8" (20 cm).

The dragon of the clouds is portrayed in this 150-year-old painting that is from a uniquely Korean genre called "functional painting." Although often called folk art, such Korean works differed from folk art as the term is used elsewhere because in Korea they usually were executed by trained, professional artists or by painter-monks rather than by amateurs. The paintings had useful and magical functions such as warding off evil or ensuring happiness and longevity and were necessary to ...click for details
