Wine pitchers as large as this one (nearly 20 inches in height) from the Republic of Georgia show the Georgians' high regard for the products of their vineyards. Incised designs of grape leaves decorate the sides and neck of this handsome silver over copper container from the late 19th/early 20th century. Vishnu, a major god in Hinduism and Indian mythology, is depicted on these mid-20th century shutters from the Indian state of Rajasthan. The god is shown in traditional fashion, with four arms and holding four symbolic items--a conch shell, lotus, wheel and mace. The decorative interior shutters have iron hinges, hasp and chain.
