Five paintings, two of them spirited scenes from Chinese opera, cover the sides and top of this 19th century octagonal shoe trunk. Painted in tawny tones of cream, orange/red and brown, the scenes float in strong contrast to the very dark green muted background color. The two opera vignettes, one of them showing the Taoist immortal Le T'ieh-kuai, patron of travelers, as a beggar with his identifying iron staff, are painted on raised panels. Hand hammered designs around the tops of copper water urns in Kathmandu, Nepal, designated particular sections of the city. This 19th century urn would have been carried to the communal well, most likely by one of the women of a household who filled the urn with water and carried it home on her head. From the 17th/18th century, this carved wood Himalayan shaman mask shows the wear of many years of use in tribal rituals. The primitive piece is the work of the Rai people from the middle hills of Nepal, and depicts an ancient deity or ancestor. The fur most likely was replaced several times during its years of use. The piece is in very good condition. Dimensions: height 11" (28 cm), width 8" (20 cm).

Painted panels framed in intricate gesso work cover all four sides of this mid-19th century Tibetan box-table. Used in Tibetan monasteries to serve tea and perform rituals, low tables such as this one have long, pull-out drawers to hold Buddhist texts or scrolls. Both ends of this table are painted with the Buddhist "jewel of the doctrine," a cluster of wish-fulfilling gems known as "cintamani" on a tray. During Buddhist festivals in Tibet, the horses were adorned (and when possible still are) with colorful trappings such as this "hat," which was placed just under the horse forelock to extend down between the eyes. The piece is constructed of thick wool pile backed and bound on the sides with heavy fabric. Leather strips sewn to the backing were used to tie the hat to the harness.
