Paintings on the doors of this mid-19th century Chinese scholar's box from Zhejiang Province have faded and mellowed. Figures of a master in grand robes with his servant behind him carrying a banner can be seen on the right door; a slender lady, also followed by a servant with a banner, is on the left door. Each scene includes a different species of bird in the bottom foreground, perhaps one type of bird symbolizing feminine qualities, the other male attributes. Both paintings are muted to t ...click for details

A glaze in a gorgeous shade of green with random streaks of blue/green elevates this late 19th century storage jar from its original utilitarian status to folk art. Stopping about an inch from the bottom of the jar, the heavy glaze drips down over the dark pottery in some areas, adding to the look of spontaneity. The glaze has the usual small inconsistencies of coverage found in provincial wares of this type. The condition of this piece is very good. Dimensions: height 8" (20 cm), diameter ...click for details

Hangings with auspicious symbols wishing good fortune and long life were deemed essential for newly married couples in provincial China. This pair of 19th century silk embroidered banners originated in Shaanxi Province and were made to be hung on either side of the marriage bed. Each banner is constructed of five shaped silk pieces arranged in a line from narrow at the top to wide at the bottom and held together with beads strung on silk thread. A Lake Taihu scholar's rock in a reddish hue is balanced here on a wood base that adds tension and intrigue. This piece is beautiful when viewed from any angle, the hallmark of a fine stone. Rocks from Lake Taihu in southern Jiangsu Province near Suzhou originally were collected in much larger sizes for use in gardens. During the Tang Dynasty, these rocks with many craters were highly prized and appear in Tang garden paintings and poetry. It was not until much later in the Ming and Qing Dyna ...click for details

Remarkably professional stitchery and harmonious color combinations and shapes are found in embroidered silk objects that were made by Chinese home embroiderers. The sophisticated work on this 19th century cloud collar was executed with only a few different types of stitches but they are nearly perfect stitches--tiny with exact spacing and even tension. Attached to the circular embroidered neckpiece are 13 embroidered lappets that loosely resemble clouds, hence the name cloud collar. While cloud ...click for details

From the Chinese countryside south of Shanghai in Zhejiang Province, this early 20th century wood and bamboo container has a faded, softened painting of a courtyard scene on the lid. Gilt paintings of auspicious flowers and endless knots, also attractively muted over time, decorate the perimeter of the lower compartment of the container. Boxes such as this were used as portable food containers and servers at wedding celebrations and other festivals. This one has a removable upper container that ...click for details

The clean, restrained lines of this pair of benches from the early 1800s are typical of Ming styling that remained in favor among some Chinese artisans until late in the Qing Dynasty. Mat seats add interest to the severity of the black finish, which is worn along the edges, giving a nice patina. Proportions and detailing are excellent, including fine beading and shaping around the perimeter and a small, curved design carved on the two outer sides of each foot. It is unusual to find a pair of ben ...click for details

Chinese scholars' rocks, in addition to being aesthetically pleasing in themselves, often evoked for the collector a form in nature--a particular mountain peak, a waterfall or an animal. Such associations were made either because of the overall shape of the rock or, as in the case of this "fish" rock, because natural patterns on the stone surface suggested a form or scene. This type of rock would have been polished to enhance the color pattern, and it is possible that the fish was ...click for details

This 16th century Chinese export plate, with its blue/grey designs, thick glaze and sandy, reddish body, typifies a category of Swatow Ware known as Kitchen Ming. Shipped from the South China port of Swatow throughout Southeast Asia, it is the least refined of Swatow export wares and is collected for its spontaneity of design and earthy appeal. The character "shou" for longevity seen in the center of this plate commonly was applied to Kitchen Ming items with a very wet brush in a free ...click for details

Shades of grey, lilac, blue, green and cream can be seen in this slab-shaped Chinese scholar's rock. Many scenes can be conjured by gazing into the layers, swirls and lines of color on its polished surfaces. It could evoke two boats on the shore of a lake, a storm in the mountains or a fantastic grotto. The rocks Chinese scholars brought into their studios as a focus for their meditation generally are divided by collectors into three categories: the landscape rock, zoomorphic rock and the f ...click for details
