Named "Lake and Lotus" by a former owner, this polished slab scholar's rock is classified as a "fantastic" or representational stone, one in which viewers see pictures from this and other worlds. While there may be a lake and lotus in the shapes created by the stone's natural color patterns, there is a stronger image of the torso of an exuberant dancer with arms thrown up in the air over his/her head, so it may just as appropriately be named "The Dancer." Dark reddish cypress wood frames seven lighter colored drawers in this 19th century Qing Dynasty Chinese scholar's box. The unusual number of drawers in this piece make it particularly suitable for use as a jewelry box. A notched cover fits over the drawers and a hasp swings down from the top to secure it in place. Used to store ink sticks, seals, paper and other small items, it is fitted with carrying handles on the sides to allow the scholar to take the box from his studio out into his gar ...click for details

Water bubbles gently out the top of this tall column of veined marble and glides down over carved lotus petals. The marble column fits over a small recirculating pump that rests inside a separate basin carved from granite. When the basin is set into the ground so that only a few inches of its rim show above ground level, it creates a pool around the lotus column. Both fountain and basin were carved in China, where feng shui principles call for the strategic placement of water-filled fountains, ...click for details

Just the right size and shape to hold magazines, this container was used in early 20th century China to carry water from a well. It is made of nicely curved willow wood staves banded with brass rings. With its oval form and tall, stable handle, the design not only was appropriate in an ergonomic sense but also was aesthetically pleasing, the hallmark of many utilitarian items from old China. The handle is carved with two pomegranates, symbol of fertility. The piece is in excellent condition. Di ...click for details

More than three feet in diameter, this rosewood panel has very open fretwork that integrates stylized characters for the wish of good fortune and happiness. The design presents this traditional Chinese symbol in a sleek manner, framing the rounded fretwork with a flat outside rim. Comma-shaped tails within the characters, the only departure from geometric lines, evoke another ancient Chinese emblem for happiness--pairs of rhinoceros horns. This piece is from the latter half of the 20th century a ...click for details

Wispy, near-abstract designs of bamboo, flowers and a bird are framed within heavy black arches on this 19th century Chinese jar. The red clay body is covered with a striking turquoise glaze that was stopped about two inches short of the bottom, then allowed to drip down over the clay in little rivers. The mouth and inside walls are glazed in black with brown undertones. This is a charming example of Chinese folk pottery. It is in excellent condition. Sometimes called Gobi Desert viewing stones, or fengli, Mongolian rocks are exotic and mysterious, with surfaces unlike those of viewing stones harvested anywhere else in the world. The unusual textures seen in this stone are the effects of wind and sand erosion combined with desert heat. The stone is fascinating when viewed from any angle. Craggy grey/brown areas that look like dense fossilized bone merge with light, shiny melt-down veins and scattered spots of faded rust color. Gobi desert sto ...click for details

Mounted as a hanging scroll, this Qing Dynasty painting depicts five gods, or kings, of the Taoist pantheon seated at tables on two tiers. They appear to be a tribunal in the process of proclaiming an edict. Each of the three gods on the upper tier has ink, seals and paper in front of him. The two gods on the lower level, senior members of the quintet, have only papers on their table. An intricately textured surface and delicate color shadings against brilliant white combine to make this a scholar's rock of breathtaking beauty. The carved hong mu base has an elliptical shape that balances and stabilizes several overhanging projections on the vertically oriented rock. Judging by the shape of the rock, popular during the Qing Dynasty, and the type of base, typical during early Qing years, this piece most likely was collected during the 19th century or earlier.
