Wispy, near-abstract designs of bamboo, flowers and a bird are framed within heavy black arches on this 19th century Chinese jar. The red clay body is covered with a striking turquoise glaze that was stopped about two inches short of the bottom, then allowed to drip down over the clay in little rivers. The mouth and inside walls are glazed in black with brown undertones. This is a charming example of Chinese folk pottery. It is in excellent condition. Sometimes called Gobi Desert viewing stones, or fengli, Mongolian rocks are exotic and mysterious, with surfaces unlike those of viewing stones harvested anywhere else in the world. The unusual textures seen in this stone are the effects of wind and sand erosion combined with desert heat. The stone is fascinating when viewed from any angle. Craggy grey/brown areas that look like dense fossilized bone merge with light, shiny melt-down veins and scattered spots of faded rust color. Gobi desert sto ...click for details

Mounted as a hanging scroll, this Qing Dynasty painting depicts five gods, or kings, of the Taoist pantheon seated at tables on two tiers. They appear to be a tribunal in the process of proclaiming an edict. Each of the three gods on the upper tier has ink, seals and paper in front of him. The two gods on the lower level, senior members of the quintet, have only papers on their table. Calligraphy across the top identifies each as "king" and by name--Chu Tian, Wu Guan, Han Cheng, Ping D ...click for details

An intricately textured surface and delicate color shadings against brilliant white combine to make this a scholar's rock of breathtaking beauty. The carved hong mu base has an elliptical shape that balances and stabilizes several overhanging projections on the vertically oriented rock. Judging by the shape of the rock, popular during the Qing Dynasty, and the type of base, typical during early Qing years, this piece most likely was collected during the 19th century or earlier. Paintings on the doors of this mid-19th century Chinese scholar's box from Zhejiang Province have faded and mellowed. Figures of a master in grand robes with his servant behind him carrying a banner can be seen on the right door; a slender lady, also followed by a servant with a banner, is on the left door. Each scene includes a different species of bird in the bottom foreground, perhaps one type of bird symbolizing feminine qualities, the other male attributes. Both paintings are muted to t ...click for details

A glaze in a gorgeous shade of green with random streaks of blue/green elevates this late 19th century storage jar from its original utilitarian status to folk art. Stopping about an inch from the bottom of the jar, the heavy glaze drips down over the dark pottery in some areas, adding to the look of spontaneity. The glaze has the usual small inconsistencies of coverage found in provincial wares of this type. The condition of this piece is very good. A Lake Taihu scholar's rock in a reddish hue is balanced here on a wood base that adds tension and intrigue. This piece is beautiful when viewed from any angle, the hallmark of a fine stone. Rocks from Lake Taihu in southern Jiangsu Province near Suzhou originally were collected in much larger sizes for use in gardens. During the Tang Dynasty, these rocks with many craters were highly prized and appear in Tang garden paintings and poetry. It was not until much later in the Ming and Qing Dyna ...click for details
