Once part of a 19th century Chinese wallscreen, this rectangular fretwork panel originally had a sliding panel of solid wood behind it that could be opened and closed to regulate light and air circulation. In place of the wood, a mirror now slides down into a slot behind the carved openwork, giving the panel a new purpose. The clever construction allows the mirror to be slipped out for easy cleaning. Rich red/gold elm wood fretwork in a modified key pattern is notched around the top and bottom o ...click for details

The five-bat design on this Chinese Qing Dynasty pendant is a pictorial rebus representing five blessings--health, wealth, virtue, longevity and lifelong protection from danger. The characters for "bat" and "happiness," both pronounced "fu," led centuries ago to the Chinese use of bat iconography on furniture, clothing and jewelry. The five-bat design took the use of this icon for happiness to new heights. This 19th century pendant has the five-bat design on both si ...click for details

19th century Chinese jewelry made from bird feathers, an unusual concept in itself, is made even more unusual by the design subject of this piece. A man in a blue feather robe, perhaps a palace guard, stands in front of a pagoda created of feathers. His painted face is carved from a small oval white stone, and the figure stands about 1/4th inch out in front of the pagoda, creating a three dimensional scene. The bright blue feathers from a tiny kingfisher bird are affixed to a metal backing. King ...click for details

A playful spirit lion, or fou dog, romps across the front of this small red Chinese trunk from Tianjin. The legendary lion/dog, a favorite design element in old China, often was shown with a ball said to represent the world. This painted lion is worn and the color is softened, creating an inviting patina. The late 19th century trunk, made of poplar wood, is fitted with two drawers. The piece is in very good condition and is a suitable size to serve as a low side table. Dimensions: height 15" ...click for details

Daruma, also called Dharma and Bodhidharma, the monk from India who introduced Zen Buddhism to China, is carved here in granite. Nearly three feet tall, this late 20th century Chinese sculpture is carved in a form characteristic of depictions of the sage, with the head shown in fine detail and the rest of the body covered in a flowing robe represented with only a few simple lines. The sensitive face has a thoughtful expression and the trademark bushy eyebrows, bald pate and beard that identify t ...click for details

A high handle with both pierced and relief carving is lacquered in red and black with touches of gilt on this 19th century Chinese teacup box. Items associated with tea drinking in China often were red, the color of joy, and were handsomely designed and decorated. The front half of the lid lifts off so that handle-less teacups could be stacked and carried in the container. This box has a nice patina and is in very good condition. White fur trim on a blue/black coat with silk pleats showing beneath it provide opulent contrast to the stark face and unadorned head above, making this an exceptionally dramatic ancestor portrait. We know the subject was the wife of a civil official because of the bird on her rank badge but rank obviously was secondary to costume since it is mostly hidden by fur and voluminous sleeves. The huge size of this hanging scroll adds to its impact. As was traditional for ancestor portraits of women, n ...click for details

The bird pictured on the red rank badge sewn on the front of this Chinese gentleman's pufu, or topcoat, indicates he held a civil post rather than an imperial or military position. Such paintings were commissioned by descendants, and this one is executed in classic ancestor portrait style, with the person facing directly forward, seated on a chair with a rounded back. Portrait protocol also called for the facial expression to be unsmiling and serious but this official looks pleasant in spite ...click for details
