Extensive, detailed carving in low relief covers the front of this Qing cabinet. Drawer fronts are covered with an intricate pattern of flower-centered diamonds. Door fronts are carved with two different scenes of deer with flowering tree branches. A variation of the diamond pattern centered with different flowers is repeated in two front vertical panels flanking the doors. The early 19th century panels on this graceful fretwork screen are centered with carved roundels, each with a different vignette of a bird and flowers. An unusual pattern of curved, carefully fitted fretwork with finely done carvings of endless knots, urns, flowers and nature dragons recalls the style and iconography of ancient Chinese bronzes. Leather in a lush Bordeaux shade covers this late 19th century Chinese trunk on all sides. An appropriate size to use as a coffee table or at the end of a bed, this trunk was used in the northern part of China for seasonal clothing storage much the same as trunks anywhere are used. Once part of a Buddhist temple in Western China, this early 19th century panel has graceful fretwork in a 17th century Ming pattern. The natural elm wood is a rich red/gold color with good grain. This late 18th/early 19th century apothecary chest once held an array of natural remedies that were mixed by the herbalist or doctor after customers recited their ailments. Characters painted on the face of each drawer to identify contents are worn and now only faintly visible. Two butterflies, Chinese symbol of joy, form the hinges on the lid of this 19th century cosmetic box. Gilt carving encircles a mirror that folds under the lid. Three drawers to hold cosmetics are hidden behind two swinging doors, and the sides of the box are fitted with metal handles. Made of elm with a rich reddish finish, the box remains sturdy. Tortoise shell bamboo forms the legs and frames the backrest on this 19th century Chinese chair. A sketch of two birds on a branch decorates bamboo slats set within the backrest framework. The chair folds flat for storage. A nice example of the strength and durability of bamboo, this piece is in very good condition. Dimensions: height 30" (76 cm), width 47" (120 cm), depth 20" (51 cm).
