Intricacy of detailing on this early 20th century Chinese handwoven bamboo basket make it a collector's piece. It is beautifully balanced and constructed, a feat of bamboo engineering. Along both sides of the bent bamboo handle are Chinese characters, now too worn and faded to decipher, that perhaps identified the maker and place of origin. The piece is in very good condition. The base appears to have been touched up in recent years with clear lacquer. Dimensions: height 16" (41 cm), wi ...click for details

The bold colors and handsome couple on this ancestor portrait from China make it an especially decorative piece of art. Although not as old as ancestor paintings we have sold for several decades, it follows classic ancestor portrait style, with each person facing directly forward, unsmiling, the man's hands and shoes showing, the woman's hands and shoes covered. The ancestor painting formula for serious faces sometimes resulted in stern, sour or vacant expressions but in this case both h ...click for details

An early 20th century Chinese box made for storing small teacups, this piece is an example of an everyday utilitarian object with design and workmanship that stands the test of time. The box is constructed of shaped wood staves fitted together in barrel fashion and secured top and bottom with brass bands. The lid is in two parts with the back half affixed and the front half removable so that the stacked cups were secure but easily taken out of the container. The box is lacquered in dark red with ...click for details

Red lacquer gives this unusual wood pitcher from China the look of a village celebration, which was most likely where it was used during the latter years of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1912). Made to serve beverages to large gatherings of guests at weddings or other festivities, the rich red color, a symbol of joy in China, was appropriate then, and today still looks joyful. The body of the pitcher is constructed of shaped wood staves fitted tightly together and held in place by two brass bands. Two ...click for details

This ancestor portrait of a handsomely robed Chinese couple includes a table plaque indicating their birth dates as November 2, 1398, and December 3, 1400. Generally commissioned after the death of the subjects, such portraits were later retouched as needed and sometimes were completely repainted. It was standard practice to add the faces and perhaps a few other elements to a pre-painted background. In the case of this painting, we can assume the woman's rank badge, the calligraphy on the pl ...click for details

This Chinese altar table has a depth of just over 11 inches and is 88 inches long, giving it a light and elegant look. Made of northern elm, it has a solid plank top and graceful carving. Tall ruyi are beautifully and simply carved on the outside and inside surfaces of the end trestles. Curved cloud spandrels on each leg echo the upward sweep of the everted flanges on either end of the plank top. An interesting old house built into the riverbank is seen on the right in this very large (nearly five feet wide) Chinese brush painting. The season is spring and the house is encircled by trees with new green leaves. Two small boats are moored near the house, ducks swim by and the scene is quiet and still, surrounded by heavy morning mists that soften the background. This is a late 20th century painting with the unidentified artist's seal and calligraphy at upper left. It is is excellent co ...click for details

From mid-19th century China, this stand held the heavy silk brocade and embroidered robes worn in wealthy households during the Qing Dynasty. The width of this large piece makes it nicely adaptable for use as a striking headboard for a queen-size bed. Eight fretwork spandrels give a light and open look to the dark walnut wood. Pierced carving on the center roundel depicts foliage surrounding a relief carving of the symbol for long life. The two open diamond-shaped insets at the sides echo a des ...click for details

Nearly five feet wide, this traditional Chinese brush painting on rice paper is soft and peaceful, with misty mountains backing a riverbank panorama of ancient structures and Springtime green trees. Painted during the latter part of the 20th century, the riverside scene is anchored on the traditional architecture of a hilltop temple. A stone bridge leads to the hill, with boats moored below the temple. Riverside activity at the left of the painting is balanced by a roofed stone gate and stone wa ...click for details
