This red lacquered wood teacup box from 19th century provincial China has an especially pleasing shape and patina. Happy looking dragons hold the tall handle in their mouths, and at the center are two robed figures holding streamers. The handle, carved both on front and back, folds down for compact storage. Boxes such as this, used throughout China to store small teacups, were handmade, hand carved and generally lacquered red, the Chinese color of joy. This ethnic batik of the Bai minority people in China’s Yunan Province is at once tribal and courant. The mysterious indigo figures floating on the cotton rectangle peer out of red eyes and have arms thrown akimbo as though dancing at a marvelous late night party. The late 20th century piece is in excellent condition, and measures 32” (81 cm) wide by 25” (64 cm).

Designed to store and serve dumplings, this unusual Qing reed and wood basket originated in China’s western Shaanxi Province, which has a long-standing reputation for producing excellent dumplings. Both the top and bottom are edged with wide strips of bent willow hand painted with flowers. The wood is secured to the basketry with metal studs. Excellent pierced carving of leaves and scrolling surrounds a circular piece of marble in this late 19th century Chinese piece. Marble gazing was somewhat like cloud gazing in Qing Dynasty China, when pieces of "pictorial" marble were set into furniture and hung on walls as art. Carvings of flowers representing the seasons and auspicious wishes surround this octagonal 19th century Chinese lidded box. The cypress wood container is constructed of eight panels held together with metal bands. Flower carvings are set within a rectangular frame in each panel. This piece is in very good condition. A Chinese Qing Dynasty blue and white porcelain teapot has a donut-shaped body and double ring handle to give it an unusual and compelling profile. Also unusual is a small dent pressed into the top circle of the handle to provide a comfortable thumb rest when pouring tea. This late 19th century piece has no chips; the porcelain is discolored along the top front. Dimensions: height 6" (15 cm), width 7" (18 cm), depth 1-1/2" (4 cm).
