Once studded with brightly colored tiles, this carved teak wood naga was part of a temple roof in Thailand. Laden with symbolism, the naga is said to have protected Buddha from lightning as he meditated under a bo tree. Throughout most of Southeast Asia, naga, sometimes called the dragon of the sea, have been positioned on rooftops and at entrances to protect from natural disasters and ward off evil spirits. When weathered and mounted on a stand such as this 19th century naga, they become exotic ...click for details

From late 19th century Burma, this painting shows a woman of privilege, perhaps a queen, smoking a large cheroot, which is a common practice for Burmese women even today. She is seated on a low divan and holds a young girl, probably her daughter, on her lap. A slender attendant sits to her right next to a nursing mother, or perhaps a wet nurse, holding a child. A servant child with an alert expression watches from behind the divan. The servant's dark clothing contrasts with the colorful fine ...click for details

An abundance of fine pierced carving gives this 19th century Chinese portal a lighter, more delicate look than generally found in Qing pieces of this scale. The center portion, with its graceful scrolling and carved tassels and beads, obviously was designed to herald the significance of one's passage beneath it. Touches of gilt on the rich red lacquer highlight carvings meant to convey important symbolic messages. Both the carvings and color establish that this was the portal to the antecha ...click for details

A deep lid designed to keep betel leaves fresh fits snugly over the high-sided bottom of this 18th century silver betel box from Laos. An intricate pattern of small curved leaves that resemble jumping fish covers the sides and top of the lid. The top also has four circles of beading and a scalloped edge. A stylized animal in higher relief than the surrounding work centers the top of the lid. The bottom of the container is covered with a fretwork pattern inside two frames of small circles and the ...click for details

A rich green glaze with artful touches of brown transforms this late Qing household container into a special object. The end of the small spout was left unglazed. An unusual roughly formed ceramic rope extends from the spout to the body of the jar. In keeping with the container's earthy character, hanging loops around the top are casually formed, and some are green, some brown. This late 19th/early 20th century jar is from Hunan Province in South China. The glaze shows a few firing flaws (se ...click for details

In provincial China, it was traditional for women to embroider auspicious symbols on silk shapes that they linked together with beads and loops to create long, mobile-like bedside hangings. This 19th century pair is from Shaanxi Province. Each of these hangings has seven pieces, all embroidered with emblems wishing a happy marriage and a long and successful life. Four of the pieces on each hanging are edged with cutouts of ruyi, a mushroom-shaped symbol for long life. Each hanging has a pair of ...click for details

Used in Tibetan monasteries to serve tea and perform rituals, low tables such as this one have long, pull-out drawers or boxes to hold Buddhist texts and scrolls. The front and both ends of this 19th century box-table are covered with painted foliage and flowers outlined with gesso. Wood aprons with a Tibetan design that incorporates the swastika, Buddhist symbol of law, extend the table almost to the floor on the front and sides. Boldly decorated with underglaze cobalt blue in a pattern of loose lines overlaid with two vivid flowers, this Meiji Arita dish contrasts its precise shape with a free and floating central design. Rim patterns of bamboo, flowers and crosshatching, also loosely drawn, are divided into eight sections to emphasize the octagonal form. Four scrolling designs decorate the rim backs. A Kanji mark on the back of the plate translates as "treasure," perhaps a fanciful addition by the maker. Arit ...click for details

A gorgeous Indian dancer strikes a pose of pure attitude in this classic 19th century Indian miniature of the Rajasthan School. Of the various Indian schools of painting, Rajput and Rajput-Mughal styles have, in our view, the most enduring appeal. This Rajput work demonstrates the look of languorous elegance characteristic not only of that school of painting but of the architecture of palaces and temples that still exist throughout the state of Rajasthan. In this miniature, the dancer stands in ...click for details

Wine pitchers as large as this one (nearly 20 inches in height) from the Republic of Georgia show the Georgians' high regard for the products of their vineyards. Incised designs of grape leaves decorate the sides and neck of this handsome silver over copper container from the late 19th/early 20th century. The copper shows through the thin silver coating for an interesting patina. Such a pitcher would have been used at the frequent traditional banquets, called supras, an important element of ...click for details
