Excellent pierced carving of leaves and scrolling surrounds a circular piece of marble in this late 19th century Chinese piece. Marble gazing was somewhat like cloud gazing in Qing Dynasty China, when pieces of "pictorial" marble were set into furniture and hung on walls as art. Patterns in the marble veins were said to resemble mountains, water scenes, or auspicious flowers and birds. This piece, with its beautifully carved hardwood frame, looks quite Victorian and is in very good con ...click for details

Beautiful detailing on this whimsical carved and lacquered box transform a pickled tea container into a wonderful piece of folk art. From early 20th century Burma, the container is carved so the long, graceful neck of the swan serves as the handle for the lid of the box. Underneath the swan is a tortoise, symbol of the universe in Buddhist iconography. A fish hanging from the swan's bill may have been included as a symbolic hope for abundance. Extensive detailing on the swan's head, neck ...click for details

Handcarved wooden molds used in making rice cakes for Chinese celebrations at New Year and the first full moon conveyed a family's hopes for good fortune in the coming year. On this set of four, special wishes for abundance are expressed with carvings of fish, symbolizing plenty, regeneration and harmony. The rice cakes themselves, whether made with such special molds or just patted into round or oval shapes, carry a symbolic meaning of peace, harmony and the family circle. Also called moon ...click for details

A silver bracelet from Java is formed by a sinuous coiling snake with over-sized eyes staring out at the curious world. Whimsy merges with realism as incised scales on the coil change into scrolling, a flower, then back to scales. The out-stretched head with its bug eyes appears to be searching for a friend rather than a victim. This bracelet can be worn several ways: on the wrist, pushed up toward the elbow or around the upper arm in Cleopatra fashion. We purchased this piece in the mid-1990s i ...click for details

A graceful royal Buddha with Arakanese accoutrements, the right hand in the sign of the wheel of law, or vitarka mudra, a gesture of intellectual discourse, sits atop a tall double lotus throne. The figure, nearly 26 inches in height, is carved of heavy teak wood coated with lacquer and gilded. Arakanese attributes are evident in the square face and slender body, long ear pieces hanging on either side of an elaborate chest ornament, upper arm bands and flowing cuffs. Such royal Buddha images, kn ...click for details
