This ethnic batik of the Bai minority people in China’s Yunan Province is at once tribal and courant. Finely carved and fitted fretwork in this 19th century Chinese interior window panel is emphasized by the addition of a mirror. The abstract winged shapes surround a circle that seems to float within the fretwork. Many thousands of different fretwork patterns such as this were created in China for use as architectural or decorative elements. The hand carved wood pieces on this panel and on all antique Chinese fretwork are closely fitted and held together in a puzzle-like fashion without glue or ...click for details

Hand carved of teak wood in Laos, this hanger provides an elegant way to display large collectible textiles. The end pieces are fully carved front and back with lotus flowers, Buddhist emblem of purity and perfection. Handcarved wood molds used in making rice cakes for Chinese celebrations at New Year and the first full moon conveyed a family’s hopes for good fortune in the coming year. On this set of three, special wishes for wealth are expressed with carvings of coins, for joy with the butterfly shapes, for abundance with fish, and for protection with dragons. The rice cakes themselves, whether made with such special molds or just patted into round or oval shapes, carry a symbolic meaning of peace, harmony ...click for details

SOLD

Excellent pierced carving of leaves and scrolling surrounds a circular piece of marble in this late 19th century Chinese piece. Marble gazing was somewhat like cloud gazing in Qing Dynasty China, when pieces of "pictorial" marble were set into furniture and hung on walls as art. Patterns in the marble veins were said to resemble mountains, water scenes, or auspicious flowers and birds. This piece, with its beautifully carved hardwood frame, looks quite Victorian and is in very good con ...click for details

A reclining Mandalay Buddha with a serene face and gracefully draped robe is carved of dense Burmese teakwood. Detailed edging on the robe, and the forehead band and tightly curled hair over the wide Mandalay unisha are fine examples of the artful use of thayo, a thickened lacquer used with great expertise by Burmese lacquer artisans. Traces of gold add richness to the thin coating of red/brown lacquer that covers the figure. This exquisite mid-20th century Buddha is in excellent condition. Dime ...click for details

The warmth from an open fire reflected on the time-worn hands and face of a Vietnamese grandmother is felt when viewing this charcoal sketch by an artist from Danang who signs her work with only the name "My." The piece is dated 1997 and, although the open fire suggests a country or mountain locale, during that time it was still fairly common to see people gathered before fires on the back streets in some of Vietnam's cities. The woman's clothing indicates an urban grandmother, ...click for details

SOLD

A silver bracelet from Java is formed by a sinuous coiling snake with over-sized eyes staring out at the curious world. Whimsy merges with realism as incised scales on the coil change into scrolling, a flower, then back to scales. The out-stretched head with its bug eyes appears to be searching for a friend rather than a victim. This bracelet can be worn several ways: on the wrist, pushed up toward the elbow or around the upper arm in Cleopatra fashion. We purchased this piece in the mid-1990s i ...click for details

Two native bearers hold aloft a bronze gong creating a tableau that was likely made for a colonial official during Burma's long colonial period (1885-1941). This is a large piece--the figures nearly two feet tall, weighing 22 pounds each--suited for use in a large dining room or entry hall. According to accounts in "Victoria and Albert Museum" by John Lowry, and "Burmese Crafts Past and Present" by Sylvia Fraser-Lu, large, ornamental gong stands were among objects sought ...click for details
