Guanyin, the Chinese goddess of mercy and compassion, generally seen as a standing figure, is shown kneeling in this late 18th century bronze. The bodhisattva holds a small bowl, and her robe and jewelry are shown in detail. Her face is serene, and her elaborate hairstyle and crown are finely defined. The bronze has a mellow patina and the statue is in excellent condition. Dimensions: height 6 1/2" (17 cm), width 3" 3/4 (10 cm), depth 2 3/4" (7 cm).

An example of the care that was taken by artisans in old Japan to produce utilitarian items of quiet beauty, this 19th century mid-Meiji period cask was used for mixing and storing sushi rice. It is constructed of cedar staves held in place with twisted bamboo. A favorite Japanese motif, the plum blossom crest, decorates the lid and one end of the piece, and another crest, probably the mon of the family that had the tub made, decorates the other end piece. Five Taoist immortals are molded in high relief around the sides of this 14th century Yuan Dynasty (1279-1368) teapot. The figures are glazed in apple green on a background of thick crazed amber glaze that stops short of covering the base, revealing the Yixing clay body of the pot. An early example of Yixing ware, it is a heavy vessel with thick walls and a sturdy handle, and has survived the years in very good condition with wear showing only on the high areas of the green glaze. In Burma (now called Myanmar), lacquer receptacles called hsun-ok were used for centuries to carry gifts of food to the Buddhist monasteries. The tapered top of this early 20th century hsun-ok, which is of the particular shape called ok-kwet, is created by five trays that fit one on top of the next over the wide bottom footed bowl.
