$800

A magnificent silver belt is made of 112 separate silver rectangles, all of them hallmarked, fitted closely together around a leather strap. This piece belonged to a family from the Republic of Georgia who identified the belt as Russian, and sold it not long after Georgia declared its independence following the demise of the USSR. Hallmarks appear to be in Cyrillic and, while difficult to decipher, resemble the letters “MP,” which may be an identification of the silversmith. Four of the rectang ...click for details

$590

A colorful starburst disk shows the robust design typical of mountainous areas in the Republic of Georgia and in neighboring Dagestan and beyond in Central Asia. This large (5 inch diameter) piece, from Khevsureti, an eastern province in the Republic of Georgia, has been fitted with a long silver chain for use as a pendant but resembles in both size and design similar disks we have seen used as belt closings in regions of the Causasus and Central Asia. Unidentified stones in green, amber and br ...click for details

$200

Hand printed fabrics were created with these early 20th century carved wood printing blocks from Turkey. Each of the five variously sized and shaped blocks is deeply carved with different types of flowers. The four smaller blocks are shaped with a hand grip on the sides; the largest block most likely was placed in a handled holder. These relics of Turkey’s textile industry probably were used to print silk, as the production of even enough material for a scarf would have required considerable ti ...click for details

$120

Handmade silver tubes of various lengths are strung together to form this simple, unusual necklace from Tbilisi in the Republic of Georgia. Made of two separate strands, the necklace may have been part of an ethnic costume or just the decorative invention of a home artisan. Dating this necklace is guesswork as a search on Georgian ethnography gave no clue except discussions of the popularity of "silversmith street" in old Tbilisi. It was sold to us as part of a family collection, most ...click for details

$700

This early 20th century Russian-made samovar was found in the Republic of Georgia following that small country's independence in 1991 after 70 years as part of the USSR. A maker's seal on the top shows a hammer and sickle under a star, perhaps a reason it was not retained by the original Georgian owners. The stamp includes the letters "BCHX" and "CCCP" as well as a Russian inscription. Another stamp, this one on the foot of the samovar, carries the initials "TK. ...click for details

$995

This nicely proportioned early 20th century brass samovar from the Republic of Georgia has a Russian maker's seal on the top front. It is one of a number of interesting acquisitions made by Silk Road Gallery owners as they explored a little known branch of the ancient Silk Route that once passed through Tbilisi, Georgia's capital. As a country that geographically and historically bridges East and West, and that was closed off to the world during its 70 years as part of the USSR, Georgia ...click for details

$470

A chased metal vessel used to serve wine, this 19th century pitcher from the Republic of Georgia is a reflection of that small country's historic role as a crossroad between East and West. Georgia's antiques, sometimes European, sometimes Asian in design, mirror its blend of cultural influences. While this wine pitcher obviously has Middle Eastern lines, a look at ancient Georgian wine vessels shows a split in design and motifs between pure East and pure West. Many of the oldest Georgian ...click for details

These five agate stones hung with silver-toned disks formed a festive collar sewn on to the dress of a woman in the Caucasus Mountain region of the Republic of Georgia. Attached to the dress through loops on both ends, the jewelry resembled a necklace. It is similar in design to jewelry from Muslim countries to the east, Dagestan and Turkmenistan, as is much of the jewelry from the eastern areas of Georgia. This late 19th century piece, probably made by a village artisan, has vitality in its les ...click for details

From early 20th century Tbilisi in the Republic of Georgia, this silver bracelet shows some similarity in design to jewelry that originated in the Caucasus Mountains regions to the north. Three beaded balls with flower petal markings are separated with fine silver wire wrapped around the heavier silver wire that forms the bracelet. The pliable bracelet wire, twisted on one side, smooth on the other, can be shaped to fit the wrist. As shown, the bracelet measures about 3" (7 cm) in diameter.

Hallmarked and dated 1894, this silver salt cellar from the Republic of Georgia stands on three ball feet. Flowers and leaves engraved on the side are centered with a plain cartouche. Art and design from Georgia, a geographic and cultural bridge between East and West, draws on both Asian and European aesthetic traditions. This salt cellar leans more toward the small country's European side. It is in very good condition. Dimensions: height 1" (3 cm), diameter 3" (7 cm).
