This is a museum-quality 16th century bronze Ava Buddha with a dedication inscription on the back of the high stepped throne. The bronze has aged to a wonderful black patina, and remaining gold leaf on the finely modeled figure and throne adds richness. The face has sweeping brows and well executed eyes. From the Arakan Kingdom that flourished in the western part of Burma (Myanmar), this 14th century bronze Buddha torso has a presence that communicates across the centuries. The high crown, graceful hand position and body modeling of this 19th century Burmese Mandalay Buddha show strong Thai influence. This large lacquered and gilded carved wood image, which depicts Buddha passing into nirvana, rests on a wood pallet covered with deep red lacquer. Nearly four feet in height, this 19th century Burmese Mandalay Buddha holds thw right hand in the varada gesture, which signifies fulfillment of all wishes, boon granting and charity. The Buddha holds a small fruit offering in the right hand and stands on a lotus throne. The figure is made of carved dense Burmese teakwood that was lacquered and then gilded.
