A Mon Buddha from 18th century Burma has the thick facial features and very high finial that identify Mon images from the Ava period. The waisted throne is edged with geometric decorations typical of Mon images of the era. We purchased this figure about 10 years ago in a lot that included, we thought, only Shan Buddha figures of later vintage. This one is clearly from an earlier period and, although there is some overlap between the Shan and Mon sub-states in the characteristics of their Buddha ...click for details

These lacquered wood figures of Buddha and five monks are from Burma, where they are displayed to commemorate Dhama Sakya, or First Sermon Day, in honor of what is believed to have been the Buddha’s initial teaching following enlightenment. The important event is celebrated annually on the fourth day of the sixth month of the Buddhist calendar, which falls sometime in June or July. In the tableau, the Buddha, after just achieving enlightenment, meets five ascetics at the town of Saranath, near ...click for details

An early 20th century Buddha from a Shan village in Burma wears an outer robe that flares wide at either side framing a lavishly adorned robe pulled tightly across the legs in a form fitting look originally associated with Pagan figures. The Buddha has the right hand turned palm out in varada mudra, a gesture of wish fulfillment and charity. Carved of teak wood, it is coated with dark red lacquer touched with gilding. Robe adornments were created with a uniquely Burmese lacquer process involvin ...click for details

This large dramatic sculpture of a royal Jambupati Buddha is two feet tall, carved of dense Burmese teak wood, with curled open-work flanges and a crown with five intricately rendered leaf-covered spires. Long earrings hang forward and settle next to a necklace carved in high relief. Crossed over the chest is a sal-we, a sign of lofty rank. The beauty of this large bronze Burmese Buddha of healing is in its simplicity. The plain draped robe and the straight spare lines of the high stepped throne focus attention first on the peaceful face and next on the graceful hands. The triangular face is classic Ava, with broad sweeping brow, downcast eyes and small mouth in a slight smile. Fingers of the right hand, in earth touching mudra, rest with the tips bent gently outward; balanced in the left hand palm is the symbol of healing, a kalas ...click for details

Traces of gold leaf remain on this Pagan dry lacquer Buddha head from the late 1700s. The head rests on a contemporary removable black metal stand. The dry lacquer technique, used by Burmese artisans from the mid-18th century until the beginning of the 20th century, produced finely modeled hollow images that were both strong and light in weight. The labor-intensive method involved a number of steps. First the image was shaped from clay, then wrapped in a lacquer-soaked cloth. A pliable mixture ...click for details

A crowned bronze Buddha in the Arakan style sits in meditation on a double lotus throne that rests atop a large figural pedestal. This early 20th century lost wax casting of a royal Buddha follows a form introduced in the 14th century Arakan Kingdom that was located in what is now Rakhine in Western Burma. The high opulent crown, side flanges, ear plugs and elaborate chest ornament are Arakan jambhupati features. Origin of the unusual pedestal is not so easily discerned. The central figure most ...click for details

This very unusual rotund 19th century Burmese Buddha is patterned after a statue said to be carved of the wood of the sacred Bodhi tree in Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka. See a photo and description of a similar Dakkhina Sakkha Buddha in the periodical "Arts of Asia" June 1981 issue in an article on Burmese Buddha figures by Burma art expert Sylvia Fraser-Lu. Thayo, a thickened lacquer, defines edging on the robe and adornments on the heads of the elephants. The Shan, a Southeast Asian minority people living primarily in Burma, produced a wide repertoire of Buddha figures in celebration of their devout Buddhist faith. The gilded Buddha has the downcast eyes, prominent brow, small chin and large finial generally seen on Shan figures. It most likely was displayed in a village daimyo, a covered outdoor pavilion with a stepped altar holding a number of Buddha figures of various sizes, a local gathering place for daily devotion ...click for details
