This bronze 17th century Buddha is attended by two important disciples--the monk, Sariputta, on his right and the monk, Mogallana, on his left. This magnificent group of three figures has a long history in Burmese art, appearing on 12th century plaques excavated at Pagan, and on stone reliefs down through the centuries until the late 18th century when sculptors began portraying the two monks separately. Here the monks are shown kneeling on long lotus stems. All three figures show the remains of ...click for details

In Burma's remote villages, Buddha images displayed in temples and homes sometimes were the work of local artisans. The figures, created with great reverence, are humble and often quite appealing. This charming 18th century folk Buddha is from the Shan people, one of the numerous ethnic groups that make up Burma's devoutly Buddhist population. The image, carved from teak wood, was coated with several layers of black lacquer and then gilded, typical for Burmese carved wood figures. As a f ...click for details

Luminous cinnabar-colored lacquer is paired with subtle intricate design on this early 20th century betel box from Burma. Fine black lines incised on the lacquer create a tortoise shell pattern, which is punctuated around the side and top of the deep lid with small astrological figures also drawn in black. The deep hatbox style lid fits snugly over the high-sided container, also covered with the tortoise shell design. Cylindrical boxes such as this, called kun-it, were used to store ingredients ...click for details
