$495

A metal incense burner from Ceylon is cast to represent the Buddhist demon Mara as part bird, part human. Mara is the Buddhist personification of the temptations of the world, and takes different forms in the iconography, sometimes appearing as various creatures and demons, sometimes as a young and handsome human. The story of Mara and his armies attempting to lure Buddha away from the path to enlightenment as he meditated under the Bodhi tree provides many icons in the Buddhist pantheon. This low folding table from Tibet is covered on three sides with intricate gesso in foliage and textile patterns, giving it richness and depth. The wear on the table suggests it was used in a monastery as an altar since the gesso work shows minimal wear but the top obviously was heavily used over a long period of time. Folding tables such as this also traveled with monks and nomadic families although this one does not appear to have spent time lashed on the back of a yak. The sides and front fol ...click for details

This 18th century Tibetan painted table has three collapsible sides that fold under the top, making it portable and practical for a way of life built around long pilgrimages. The spirit of monks and whole families traveling across mountain passes is evoked in the design and still-vivid colors of this table. It may have been the only item of furniture owned by a nomadic family. Or it may have been carried on the back of a yak with monks on their way to visit remote villages. The table top shows s ...click for details

From Rajasthan, painted in the Mewar style, this miniature depicts two members of a royal household on a picnic. They are attended by three servants--one whisking away flying insects, one pouring wine from a flask and the third holding another flask. The seated couple are sharing a cup of wine. All five figures stand out in stark contrast to the dark gray/green forest that surrounds them. Two lines of Urdu calligraphy float in gold-colored paint across the top of the miniature. $1100

The splendor and sophistication of the Delhi court 300 years ago are reflected in this pair of Indian miniatures of a king and queen of Delhi. Painted in the mid-19th century, the portraits memorialize Delhi's past rulers in classic Mughal style. The king, dressed in gold, purple and peach finery, is shown holding a small red book. Two panels above the portrait repeat images of his elaborate headpiece and the book. Panels below show his royal slippers and two flowers. The colors of the queen ...click for details

$2900

This early 19th century Tibetan cabinet is painted with flowers and foliage that revealed original deep colors as we painstakingly removed layers of soot from the surface. A combination of the high Himalayan climate and soot from yak butter lamps has the fortunate result of protecting colors on painted Tibetan furniture. The inside of this piece still retains the wonderful exotic odor of burning lamps. Each of the four doors is centered with a cartouche of red and purplish flowers nestled among ...click for details

$1375

An important example of early 20th century workmanship of India's Jain minority, this sterling silver necklace is designed around iconic figures in high relief. Krishna, the central figure, is depicted as a cowherd leaning against one of his cattle as he plays his flute. A three-headed serpent hovers over the deity and he is flanked by ten finely detailed peacocks that curve upward to form the sides of the necklace. Five hanging clusters of beads give lightness and movement to the piece. Thi ...click for details

$980

A beautifully crafted piece of jewelry from Rajasthan in North India, this sterling silver necklace has finely embossed images of 44 peacocks and is itself shaped to resemble a fanned peacock tail. From the late 19th century, the necklace is made of 92.5 percent pure silver and weighs 240 grams. Judging by its weight, regal design and motif of the peacock, national bird of India, this was a ceremonial piece and most likely was worn by a man. Eight vertical plates with peacocks and flowers in gra ...click for details

Two peacocks perch smartly atop this early 20th century silver comb from the state of Rajasthan in North India. The handle is a reservoir for scented oil dispensed in small amounts as the comb is drawn through the hair. A cap between the peacocks screws out to allow the handle cavity to be filled. Etchings, each centered with a different flower and surrounded by foliage, cover both sides of the handle. The peacocks, Hindu symbol of immortality, give this unusual piece the regal Rajasthani look. ...click for details

A synthesis of strong Mughal influence with the Mewar Rajasthani school of painting, this early 20th century miniature depicts a woman dressed in a filmy costume sitting on a balcony playing a string instrument. The peacock chair suggests a royal courtyard, which overlooks water flanked by white palaces with a green hill beyond. Small flowers and delicate Urdu calligraphy border the top and bottom of the scene. The work is done in natural pigments on an Urdu book page. The scene and its inner bo ...click for details
