This early 19th century Tibetan cabinet is painted with flowers and foliage that revealed original deep colors as we painstakingly removed layers of soot from the surface. A combination of the high Himalayan climate and soot from yak butter lamps has the fortunate result of protecting colors on painted Tibetan furniture. Two peacocks perch smartly atop this early 20th century silver comb from the state of Rajasthan in North India. The handle is a reservoir for scented oil dispensed in small amounts as the comb is drawn through the hair. A cap between the peacocks screws out to allow the handle cavity to be filled. Etchings, each centered with a different flower and surrounded by foliage, cover both sides of the handle. The peacocks, Hindu symbol of immortality, give this unusual piece the regal Rajasthani look. ...click for details

A synthesis of strong Mughal influence with the Mewar Rajasthani school of painting, this early 20th century miniature depicts a woman dressed in a filmy costume sitting on a balcony playing a string instrument. The peacock chair suggests a royal courtyard, which overlooks water flanked by white palaces with a green hill beyond.
