A carved wood altar to display a small Buddha figure, this late 19th/early 20th century piece from Shandong Province in China was referred to as a "Buddha house." A cover slipped down over the display area and was removed for special family devotions. A window carved into the cover allowed the figure inside to "see" and be seen. A simple and elegant wood altar with clean lines and expert craftsmanship, this display stand and cover were made to hold a small Buddha for devotion at home. Delicate pierced carving frames the interior display area. The box lid, which slides down to cover the display area, has a round front "window" with similar pierced carving that allows the image inside to "see" and be seen. Beautifully designed and constructed of curved wood staves with a wrapped bamboo handle, this lidded container was used to carry tools needed by lamp lighters on their rounds. Five bands of ornamental carving encircle the basket. The lid is centered with a round carving representing the four points of the compass, and the base is carved with a diaper pattern in key design.
