The expression on the full, rounded face of this late Qing Chinese Buddha is both tranquil and wise, and a slight smile adds to the enigma. The forehead is marked with the third eye of spiritual wisdom, the urna, and the bare chest is marked with a swastika, an ancient emblem derived from Sanskrit, that means "so be it" or resignation to what is. The Chinese representation of the Buddha Shakyamuni often includes the swastika as a symbol that denotes the heart and mind of Buddha. An ele ...click for details

Guanyin, Chinese bodhisattva of mercy, is finely carved in huanghauli. The graceful, slender lines of this early 20th century carving put emphasis on the grain and natural sheen of the rare wood. She is full-faced, smiling and looks almost merry, another departure from the usually serene and cool Guanyin representations. The carving is in perfect c ...click for details

This 18th century ceramic figure of the Chinese Buddhist bodhisattva of mercy is unusual in several respects. The form is uncharacteristically simple for the popular Chinese goddess who typically was shown with elaborate flowing robes. The pert face is particularly different with its full lips, upturned nose and wide eyes. Only one hand is visible and it rests on her right knee. The high beaded headpiece and heavy necklace identify the small statue as Guanyin. The hollow ceramic figure is heavil ...click for details

The Chinese goddess of mercy, Guanyin, is carved in relief riding on the back of a dragon whose feet are supported by clouds. Although the stone is irregularly cut around the edges, the carving appears to have been done as a stand-alone tablet rather than as part of a larger plaque. The Buddhist bodhisattva Guanyin has been a popular Chinese figure for centuries. This carving possibly was displayed outside as the face of the goddess is slightly weathered. The rest of the piece is in excellent co ...click for details
