Dated 1870 on the base, this late Qing Dynasty ceramic figure is of General Guan Gong, a popular character in Chinese opera, who is cast as brave, swashbuckling and, above all, fiercely loyal to the emperor. The piece is quite detailed, with decorative elements of the butterscotch and white costume defined in relief as well as with intricate incising. An official rides a Chilin, a mythical creature used to symbolize high rank, on the side of this 19th century Qing Dynasty underglaze blue and white jar. Two attendants with fans precede the official, and another attendant with an umbrella follows. The depth of the cobalt blue and its liberal use in the design give this jar its appeal. Bold stylized characters wishing double happiness take on an abstract look on this tall mid 19th century Qing Dynasty vase. Two sets of vivid characters on the neck of the vase and four sets around the body are surrounded by a dense network of lighter blue tendrils and patterns of lines, circles and triangles. Modelled Pekinese dogs are paired to form the handles. The vase is in excellent condition. Dimensions: height 17" (43 cm), diameter 7 1/2" (19 cm).
