The high crown, graceful hand position and body modeling of this 19th century Burmese Mandalay Buddha show strong Thai influence. This large lacquered and gilded carved wood image, which depicts Buddha passing into nirvana, rests on a wood pallet covered with deep red lacquer. Mandalay relief-moulded lacquer inset with bits of colored mica adorns the headband and body-hugging robe. The eyes are wide and realistic under upward sweeping brows, and the small mouth is upturned in a smile. This unusu ...click for details

Nearly four feet in height, this 19th century Burmese Mandalay Buddha holds thw right hand in the varada gesture, which signifies fulfillment of all wishes, boon granting and charity. The Buddha holds a small fruit offering in the right hand and stands on a lotus throne. The figure is made of carved dense Burmese teakwood that was lacquered and then gilded. Dark red lacquer can be seen in areas where the gilding has worn off. Because Buddha images such as this were placed above eye-level on an a ...click for details

From the latter half of Japan's Edo Period (1614-1868), this jug has the imperfect, humble, elusive Japanese beauty called wabi-sabi. The bottle invites touch with its natural variations in texture and color. Its glaze is marked with the flaws caused by ashes from the burned wood of the kiln, and no attempt was made to smooth the ridges and dents that occurred as the clay was shaped. It is a fine example of the pottery once produced in the kilns of Tamba, a mountainous area in central Japan ...click for details

This green-glazed ceramic guard once held a sword in his clenched right hand and was part of a pottery regiment standing watch over the tomb of a Chinese nobleman. Ceramic figures and animals were buried with the nobility to announce their high status to the spirits, and to provide them with the attendants, services and provisions they would require in the afterlife. This 16th century guard has a strong, alert face with staring eyes under heavy brows, a flowing mustache, pursed mouth and promine ...click for details

Guanyin, Chinese bodhisattva of mercy, is finely carved in huanghauli. The graceful, slender lines of this early 20th century carving put emphasis on the grain and natural sheen of the rare wood. Immediately recognizable as Guanyin from the high headpiece, the figure wears a plain robe and no jewelry, unlike most Chinese images of the goddess. She is full-faced, smiling and looks almost merry, another departure from the usually serene and cool Guanyin representations. The carving is in perfect c ...click for details

Luminous cinnabar-colored lacquer is paired with subtle intricate design on this early 20th century betel box from Burma. Fine black lines incised on the lacquer create a tortoise shell pattern, which is punctuated around the side and top of the deep lid with small astrological figures also drawn in black. The deep hatbox style lid fits snugly over the high-sided container, also covered with the tortoise shell design. Cylindrical boxes such as this, called kun-it, were used to store ingredients ...click for details

This 18th century ceramic figure of the Chinese Buddhist bodhisattva of mercy is unusual in several respects. The form is uncharacteristically simple for the popular Chinese goddess who typically was shown with elaborate flowing robes. The pert face is particularly different with its full lips, upturned nose and wide eyes. Only one hand is visible and it rests on her right knee. The high beaded headpiece and heavy necklace identify the figure as Guanyin. The weighty ceramic figure is heavily gla ...click for details
