$2900

This early 19th century Tibetan cabinet is painted with flowers and foliage that revealed original deep colors as we painstakingly removed layers of soot from the surface. A combination of the high Himalayan climate and soot from yak butter lamps has the fortunate result of protecting colors on painted Tibetan furniture. The inside of this piece still retains the wonderful exotic odor of burning lamps. Each of the four doors is centered with a cartouche of red and purplish flowers nestled among ...click for details

A high ranking official rides a mythical chilin rendered as a wonderfully lumpy animal in this mid 19th century Chosen (Yi) Dynasty painting. The official carries incense and is followed by a servant carrying a staff. They travel on a cloud and have clouds in front of them. The work is unsigned, characteristic of Korean folk art, which was commissioned to represent a family's specific hopes for the future. The chilin was a badge of high rank as was the style of black hat worn by the official ...click for details

A lovely speckled glaze of blue, violet and rich brown covers this 19th century utility jar from China's Jiangsu Province. Unlike much of the utility pottery from that time which was glazed in hurried, casual fashion allowing the glaze to run down in uneven drops toward the foot of the vessel, this piece was attended more carefully by the potter who ended the glaze in a precise line a few inches short of the foot. Glazed on the inside in a dull brown, the jar most likely was used for storing ...click for details

Outer petals are embroidered with 20 different colorful butterflies; inner petals have 20 different vases holding a variety of flowers. Backed with white silk and set within a traditional Asian frame, this costume piece from China's provincia ...click for details

An important example of early 20th century workmanship of India's Jain minority, this sterling silver necklace is designed around iconic figures in high relief. Krishna, the central figure, is depicted as a cowherd leaning against one of his cattle as he plays his flute. A three-headed serpent hovers over the deity and he is flanked by ten finely detailed peacocks that curve upward to form the sides of the necklace. Five hanging clusters of beads give lightness and movement to the piece. Thi ...click for details

A beautifully crafted piece of jewelry from Rajasthan in North India, this sterling silver necklace has finely embossed images of 44 peacocks and is itself shaped to resemble a fanned peacock tail. From the late 19th century, the necklace is made of 92.5 percent pure silver and weighs 240 grams. Judging by its weight, regal design and motif of the peacock, national bird of India, this was a ceremonial piece and most likely was worn by a man. Eight vertical plates with peacocks and flowers in gra ...click for details

Two peacocks perch smartly atop this early 20th century silver comb from the state of Rajasthan in North India. The handle is a reservoir for scented oil dispensed in small amounts as the comb is drawn through the hair. A cap between the peacocks screws out to allow the handle cavity to be filled. Etchings, each centered with a different flower and surrounded by foliage, cover both sides of the handle. The peacocks, Hindu symbol of immortality, give this unusual piece the regal Rajasthani look. ...click for details

Shimmering gold and blue tiles represent scales on this 200-year-old naga (sea dragon) from Thailand. Used as temple roof finials or in pairs at entrances to guard against evil spirits and natural disasters, the powerful, mystical naga are among the most revered Buddhist symbols in Thailand. With its soaring, curving form, this particular naga is especially sculptural. It shows the emerging outline of the sinuous Thai cho-fa, a simplified, streamlined shape that evolved from the naga. $600

Chinese opera scenes are painted on the sides and lid of this late 19th century Chinese trunk. The octagon shape of the container, traditional for Chinese shoe trunks, is echoed in the octagon-shaped borders on the paintings. Such trunks quite often had a background color of turquoise, the hue on this one, or of very dark green, although we have seen them in black and bright blue as well. The size of the trunk makes it suitable for use as an accent table. There is wear on the painted surface app ...click for details
