A late 19th century hand hammered copper tray from the Republic of Georgia has a thin coating of tin, similar to wine pitchers we have from the same country. (See our catalogue listings 27-85 and 28-01.) This large (26-inch diameter) tray most likely was used to hold such wine pitchers during the festive wine-infused dinners called supras that are traditional in the Georgian culture. A silver belt from the Republic of Georgia is made of 30 separate rectangular segments covering leather. The embossed Victorian-look design is similar to sketches in “Ethnography of Georgia” by Nino Brailashvili, Khelovneba Publishing, Tbilisi, 1990, illustration 139. The book describes the work done by Georgian artisans in numerous silver and gold workshops that once were concentrated along one narrow street in Tbilisi. Silver content on this piece is 37 percent.
