$345

A silver and garnet bracelet from Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) has the Victorian look that was the signature design style of jewelry from the delightful central highlands city of Kandy, the capital of the old Singhalese kingdom. The city was, and remains, the artistic and spiritual center of the country. Silver filigree work surrounds both the gemstone and hinge on this late 19th/early 20th century bracelet. The garnet is good quality—the country was and continues to be known for fine gemstones—and i ...click for details

$1200

This large framed Korean brush painting, signed and sealed by Korean artist Jea Min, is 58 inches in height. The late 19th century painting of a stand of bamboo shows the finely constrained lines and subtlety of the brush in the hands of a master. Ink and slight color on paper, it is matted with plain black silk and set within a traditional wood rounded corner Korean frame. A thin gold holding line separates the painting and mat. Touches of color appear in the red artist's seal on the lower ...click for details

A wood tray from late 19th century China is gilded with a scene from a scholar’s or high official’s home of an elaborately robed lady of leisure. She is seen in a screened and curtained area, indicated to the left of the tableau, and is seated reading poetry at a table. The woman’s attitude is casual and her surroundings elegant. Gilded foliage decorates the tray’s rim, and a maker’s seal is painted in red on the back side. This is a piece that preserves a glimpse into a China long gone. It show ...click for details

The piece is quite detailed, with decorative elements of the butterscotch and white costume defined in relief as well as with intricate incising. Scenes of village life painted on this late 18th/early 19th century Chinese cabinet give it folk art charm. Drawn in black, similar to a brush painting, and highlighted with touches of gold, villagers stroll among pavilions, trees and flowers shown against a rich red background. The paintings have faded to an appealing patina. A sliding bolt on a brass hasp secures the two doors, which swing out on pegs that ride in grooves, eliminating the need for hinges. Sides, back and top of the cabinet are ...click for details

A swirling pastoral scene centered with a fantastic plum tree is represented in this polished, slab-shaped Chinese scholar’s rock. Classified as a “fantastic” or representational stone, one in which viewers see pictures from this and other worlds, it is in shades of molten caramel with touches of green floating across the lower right and left quadrants. The shape of the tree, which an earlier owner perceived as a plum tree, is echoed by another small tree of the same shape in the distance. Gre ...click for details

This late 19th century bronze bell is cast in same design as the huge bells that are prominent features outside Buddhist temples and monasteries throughout Burma. It hangs from a metal crossbar that also supports a U-shaped handle flanked with “to-naya” (snake-like dragons) that match those on the bell hanger. Unlike the huge bells that weigh a ton or more and are struck on the outside with a large wooden mallet, this bell has a clapper that, despite its smaller size, produces a rich and sonorou ...click for details

Iridescent blue kingfisher bird feathers were used to create the five petals of this 19th century Chinese pin that was most likely used as a hair ornament. Feathers from the tiny kingfisher bird decorated items used by the ladies of Chinese imperial courts for many centuries. Jewelry and other articles covered with the feathers were found in Tang Dynasty tombs. In the 18th century, the fashion developed for very large, intricate feather headpieces, and these can be seen worn by empresses and the ...click for details
