Guanyin, Chinese bodhisattva of mercy, is finely carved in huanghauli. The graceful, slender lines of this early 20th century carving put emphasis on the grain and natural sheen of the rare wood. Immediately recognizable as Guanyin from the high headpiece, the figure wears a plain robe and no jewelry, unlike most Chinese images of the goddess. She is full-faced, smiling and looks almost merry, another departure from the usually serene and cool Guanyin representations. The carving is in perfect c ...click for details

Luminous cinnabar-colored lacquer is paired with subtle intricate design on this early 20th century betel box from Burma. The deep hatbox style lid fits snugly over the high-sided container, also covered with the tortoise shell design. Cylindrical boxes such as this, called kun-it, were used to store ingredients ...click for details

This 18th century ceramic figure of the Chinese Buddhist bodhisattva of mercy is unusual in several respects. The form is uncharacteristically simple for the popular Chinese goddess who typically was shown with elaborate flowing robes. The pert face is particularly different with its full lips, upturned nose and wide eyes. Only one hand is visible and it rests on her right knee. The high beaded headpiece and heavy necklace identify the figure as Guanyin. The weighty ceramic figure is heavily gla ...click for details

Hand-loomed silk from Meiji Era Japan with a vignette from a folk legend about a young boy who neglected his duty of caring for the water buffalo and, with the help of a goddess acting as fairy godmother, was taught about responsibility. The scene is outlined with meticulous cutwork, a process that involves cutting away tiny sections of threads to outline the design woven into the fabric. The figures are on the bottom half of the cloth, which has a one-half inch self fringe at both ends. The clo ...click for details
