$400

A rich variegated glaze elevates this 19th century Chinese storage jar above its past status as a household utility item. Its earthy appeal is a product of Jiangsu Province, where for centuries clay and expertise have combined to make both pottery and porcelain that earned the area a reputation as China's ceramics center. A blue glaze appears in a liberal dusting around the shoulder of the vessel, which then changes to purplish brown around the widest part and back to a subtle blue dusting t ...click for details

$225

A carved wood altar to display a small Buddha figure, this late 19th/early 20th century piece from Shandong Province in China was referred to as a "Buddha house." A cover slipped down over the display area and was removed for special family devotions. A window carved into the cover allowed the figure inside to "see" and be seen. Two nicely carved and gilded dragons flank the Buddha display area. Pierced carvings of two more dragons on the sides of the altar allow the Buddha f ...click for details

This low folding table from Tibet is covered on three sides with intricate gesso in foliage and textile patterns, giving it richness and depth. The wear on the table suggests it was used in a monastery as an altar since the gesso work shows minimal wear but the top obviously was heavily used over a long period of time. Folding tables such as this also traveled with monks and nomadic families although this one does not appear to have spent time lashed on the back of a yak. The sides and front fol ...click for details

$1100

Nicely grained beechwood gives this pair of late 19th century Chinese panels a smooth, satin-like finish. The fretwork design is elegantly simple but required numerous carefully cut and carved pieces of wood fitted together to create the look of an interlocking wood chain. The panels were used in a horizontal orientation and most likely were part of a large day bed. The metal hangers are new and recently added. These panels are ideally sized for use as headboards over twin beds. They are in exce ...click for details

Used as an interior transom over wide sliding doors, this early 20th century Japanese ranma was designed to allow light and air to pass through the open top section. The carved wood panel is gently curved along the top providing a nice effect within the rectangular frame. Black lacquer edging emphasizes the curve and reflects a bit of light. The carved scene is a charming Japanese house set within a grove of trees overlooking the sea, boats and snow-capped mountains in the distance. The ranma is ...click for details

This 18th century Tibetan painted table has three collapsible sides that fold under the top, making it portable and practical for a way of life built around long pilgrimages. The spirit of monks and whole families traveling across mountain passes is evoked in the design and still-vivid colors of this table. It may have been the only item of furniture owned by a nomadic family. Or it may have been carried on the back of a yak with monks on their way to visit remote villages. The table top shows s ...click for details

From Rajasthan, painted in the Mewar style, this miniature depicts two members of a royal household on a picnic. They are attended by three servants--one whisking away flying insects, one pouring wine from a flask and the third holding another flask. The seated couple are sharing a cup of wine. All five figures stand out in stark contrast to the dark gray/green forest that surrounds them. Two lines of Urdu calligraphy float in gold-colored paint across the top of the miniature. Fine relief carving on this Qing Period Chinese bed panel expresses symbolic wishes for good fortune. Made of beautifully grained hongmu (Chinese mahogany), the long panel (88 inches) is suitable for use over a king-sized bed. Stylized characters and traditional symbols, most likely chosen by the parents who commissioned the work, were used to bestow wishes on the newly married couple for long and happy lives. Carvings within the three rectangular sections demonstrate the Chinese love of homonym ...click for details

This Japanese Meiji interior transom (ranma) is the perfect size for use as a decorative headboard. A tranquil seaside scene carved into the nicely grained wood shows cypress trees and a lighthouse in the foreground with small boats riding gentle waves in the distance. The panel is framed with a narrow black lacquered liner set within a dark red lacquered outer frame. Ranma were an integral part of the architecture of the old Japanese frame houses. This Japanese silk uchikake, or outer kimono, has the effect of a dramatic painting, with gold clouds floating among sumptuous blooms spilling from a wheeled cart. Strong shades of blue, red and green are contrasted with delicate pastel flowering branches against a black silk faille background. Several Japanese textile techniques are used to achieve the spectacular effect. Gold elements are done both in couching, which involves wrapping gold around silk thread, and a technique called surikaku, w ...click for details
