Silk Road Gallery was established in 1992 in Westport, Connecticut, USA, by David and Barbara Loeding who had just returned to the United States after several years in Asia. Prior to opening their business they had pursued other careers--David in psychological research and academia, Barbara with an international corporation. Both business and personal interests had led them repeatedly to Asia where, whenever they could, they devoted their time to exploring countries and collecting artifacts. The gallery was a natural extension of their long fascination with Asian cultures and art.
In 2003, after more than a decade as a conventional storefront gallery, Silk Road was changed into an internet and by-appointment business. Still in Connecticut, it now is based in the shoreline town of Branford, about two hours north of New York City. It continues to offer unusual, culturally authentic art and antiques from across Asia. In addition, the owners use their established network of sources to search for special items for individual customers and wholesale clients.
